A RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT IN THE VILLAGE OF MURREBUE, MOZAMBIQUE

The city of Pemba in Northern Mozambique is experiencing a housing boom driven by recent discoveries of minerals, oil and gas in the nearby Rovuma Basin. The Malucu Marruma Project has been created to meet this demand through the provision of short and long-term serviced accommodation.

HIDDEN IN A CORNER OF AFRICA

The site is located in the village of Murrebue, 20km from the center of Pemba and 16km from the international airport. The 16ha site has close to 1km of beachfront, which as well as supporting activities such as diving, fishing, horse riding and yoga, will be used for the vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles and permaculture to serve fresh produce through the agrarian kitchen.

SITE PLAN

In addition to the villas the development will include a restaurant, deli, laundry, horse riding stables, a spa, a yoga pavilion, a gym and three swimming pools. The land will be used for the vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles and permaculture to serve fresh produce through the agrarian kitchen.

PERMACULTURE & SUSTAINABILITY

The project will be built and operated in accordance with the principals of Permaculture, a branch of ecological design, ecological engineering and environmental design that develops sustainable architecture and self-maintained horticultural systems modelled from natural ecosystems.

In accordance with best practice standards the project also adheres to the Criteria for Hotels and Tour Operators published by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, which serves as the international body for fostering increased knowledge and understanding of sustainable tourism practices, promoting the adoption of universal sustainable tourism principles and building demand for sustainable travel.

GASTRONOMY & CULTURAL ENGAGEMENT

In addition to the villas the development will include a restaurant, deli, laundry, horse riding stables, a spa, a yoga pavilion, a gym and three swimming pools. The land will be used for the vegetable garden, orchard, berry patch and herb garden, all grown using organic principles and permaculture to serve fresh produce through the agrarian kitchen.

Malucu Marruma is uniquely positioned to offer exceptional culinary experiences. The agrarian approach to locally grow food on site will create encounters for tenants built around food, drink, and cultural engagement. Children will pick food from the site with the locals, seafood will be caught with local fishermen, and families will join chefs for shopping trips to the local Pemba markets. Cooking lessons will also be provided, either in the show kitchen of the open restaurant or on the Argentine Parilla in each of the villas or cabins.

COMMUNITY, RECREATION AND LEISURE

A beautiful site covered in a canopy of trees located on a headland on a coral reef will only get you so far; designing to standards of a five-star hotel means nothing unless there is a sense of community. Which is why Malucu Marruma will set a new benchmark for sustainable expatriate living.

The accommodation is designed to enhance the sense of community by encouraging entertaining through the use of open-air shared living spaces, oversized diningtables (indoor and outdoor), Argentine parillas (BBQ’s) and extensive terraces. Even the couches are designed to be deep enough and long enough that kids andguests can sleep over in comfort.

The recreational offering is extensive, and although you might not want to call them clubs, being a tenant and having preferential booking will definitely be an advantage. For lovers of the sea, Malucu Marruma offers two boats for diving, whale watching, snorkeling and game fishing trips. For lovers of the land, aside from various play areas for the children and extensive bush walking, the equestrian lovers can take advantage of the stables to ride their own horse or rent the horses on site, great for lessons, for riding through a village or galloping down the beach at sunset.

More practically, in addition to CCTV and 24 hour surveillance, the community watch will enhance the safe environment to ensure tenants can feel at home. Thisextends through basic services such as the business centre, the library, the airport transfers and a school bus for the kids.
